October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and its extremely important in our community because CMPD responded to more than 36,000 domestic violence related calls last year.  Even more alarming, is the fact that 1 in every 4 girls and 1 in every 6 boys will be sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday.
Help us celebrate Domestic Violence awareness month turning 30 and get involved! There are numerous ways to get involved and one easy way is to join and share our Purple Purse Challenge. By donating just $5 dollars today clicking the link below, you can help us meet our 5,000 goal, but more importantly you would be saving a life.

A Note from One of our Partners

When Nicole Sodoma opened the doors to Sodoma Law in 2008, it was with the intention of building a different kind of firm. When she started to put together the team, Nicole focused on creating a culture unlike any other she had encountered: a "firm family" that showed commitment to clients, to team, and to community.
In 2014, Sodoma Law announced the creation of the Sodoma Law Foundation. The Foundation supports organizations addressing issues to which the firm is deeply committed: those that improve the well-being of children regionally and nationally, and those that support the charitable endeavors of the Mecklenburg County's legal community. It aggregates the firm's charitable efforts, pro bono work and contributed funds, into areas where they can make the maximum impact. With Safe Alliance's mission 'to provide hope and healing to those impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault' and their commitment to the Mecklenburg County community, it is one of the organizations that the Sodoma Law Foundation supports each year.
Often, victims of domestic violence are not aware of the resources available to them. As Family Law attorneys and advocates, too often we see clients who are the victims of domestic violence, and we do whatever we can to ensure that our community is educated and aware of accessible resources. One of those resources is Safe Alliance's Victim Assistance/Legal Representation Program supports these victims by accompanying them to Court, and seeking domestic violence protective orders.
Joining forces to support Safe Alliance allows us to make the maximum impact in our community, and for survivors of abuse. Family Law Attorney Amanda Brisson Cannavo, serves on the Committee for Fighting for Women with Fashion, and is the current Chair for Art with Heart said, "When my husband and I returned to Charlotte from New York, one of my priorities was to find ways to give back to our community. Safe Alliance's vision reflects the philanthropic endeavors I sought to support: to 'build communities where people are empowered to grow and sustain healthy and respectful relationships, and in which we, together, actively work against the systems and beliefs that sustain poverty, racism, and gender based violence.'"
This October marks the 30th anniversary of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). "Today, while the conversation around domestic violence has become more public, awareness must continue to be raised," said Nicole Sodoma, Founder and Managing Principal of Sodoma Law. Through our commitment to our clients and our support of Safe Alliance, Sodoma Law continues to uphold the vision of providing hope and healing to those impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault.
Sodoma Law is a family-focused and family-driven law firm serving the Carolinas with offices in Charlotte, Ballantyne, and Monroe, North Carolina, and in Rock Hill, South Carolina. While the foundation of our practice maintains a unique and experienced family law firm, our practice areas have grown to encompass many other areas of law, including Business Litigation, Employment Law, and Estates, Wills and Trusts.
