Domestic Violence in the Workplace

Domestic violence has no boundaries.

Domestic violence becomes a workplace threat when an abuser attempts to control every aspect of his or her partner's life, including the workplace. Studies suggest that 74% of working female victims of domestic violence are harassed by their abusers in the workplace. Even more disturbing: A Department of Labor report in 2000 found that homicide was the second leading cause of death on the job.

Because domestic violence refuses to stay in the home, we can no longer treat it as a private issue. Though it's never easy or comfortable to discuss domestic violence, these conversations are vital to the morale and productivity of any business and its employees. More importantly, employers can help raise awareness about domestic violence for victims and survivors in the community at large.

At Safe Alliance, we work closely with our clients and community partners to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence in our community, and that includes the workplace. In addition, the guide will teach employers how to talk about domestic violence with employees and create policy that ensures safety and health for all employees.
