Lindsay Harris of Safe Alliance Honored with 2024 Community Leadership Award

In a heartfelt ceremony held by Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer B. Merriweather III, individuals who exemplify exceptional service to the community were celebrated for their dedication and impact. Among the honorees was Lindsay Harris, an Outreach Assistant and Intern and Volunteer Coordinator at Safe Alliance, who received the prestigious 2024 Community Leadership Award.

The annual awards ceremony, hosted by the District Attorney's Office, recognizes individuals whose contributions align with the office's mission to seek justice and build a safe, thriving community. This year's event carried special significance as DA Merriweather urged attendees to honor the memory of four fallen law enforcement officers, Alden Elliott, Joshua Eyer, Sam Poloche, and Thomas Weeks--while drawing inspiration from everyday heroes who make Mecklenburg County a better place.

Lindsay Harris was celebrated for her extraordinary commitment to supporting survivors of domestic violence. Since joining Safe Alliance in August 2023, she has tirelessly dedicated herself to assisting victims of intimate partner violence, often going above and beyond to provide compassionate care. A powerful example of her impact came during a recent experience where Harris accompanied a pregnant survivor navigating the complex and emotionally taxing process of obtaining a Domestic Violence Protection Order (50B).

While waiting outside the courtroom, Harris noticed the survivor showing signs of distress. Drawing on her own experience as a mother, Harris quickly recognized the severity of the situation when the survivor became ill and passed out. Acting swiftly, she called for an ambulance, provided comfort, and stayed by the survivor's side during this vulnerable moment. Harris even accompanied her to the hospital, offering unwavering support when the survivor needed it most.

This act of compassion and advocacy embodies Harris's deep commitment to ensuring survivors feel seen, supported, and safe. Her kindness and determination to confront challenging situations demonstrate why she is a beacon of hope for so many in the community.

In presenting the award, DA Merriweather emphasized the courage and leadership Harris has shown in standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. "Lindsay Harris exemplifies what it means to lead with empathy and resilience," he remarked.

Safe Alliance and the broader community are fortunate to have leaders like Lindsay Harris, whose dedication transforms lives and fosters a safer, more compassionate Mecklenburg County.
