Men For Change Speaker: William Gay

William Gay is cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After playing college football for the University of Louisville, he was drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Over the years he has built up impressive stats earning him the spot as the No. 34 overall corner among 118 qualifiers.

You may remember back in 2015 when William Gay made headlines for being fined by the NFL for wearing purple cleats in Week 7 in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. While Gay knew that he would break the NFL's uniform code with the purple cleats, he felt that his bigger mission was accomplished by saying, "People now know what purple means. We're taking steps."

Gay's mother was murdered in a domestic violence incident when he was eight years old. At the urging of other family members, his mother left her boyfriend. Shortly after she had ended the relationship, the boyfriend found her and shot her three times. The boyfriend then killed himself.

Join us on April 25th to hear William Gay's story and how he is utilizing his resources to raise awareness about domestic violence in memory of his mother.

2017 Young Professional of the Year Award

What's Men For Change?
A group of community leaders called Men For Change works on behalf of Safe Alliance to raise funds and public awareness about the epidemic of domestic violence and the role men can play to model appropriate behaviors toward women while serving as role models for youth. This year we celebrate our 20th Annual Men For Change event.

Safe Alliance
Safe Alliance is a regional trauma-focused agency that operates the Clyde and Ethel Dickson Domestic Violence Shelter in Charlotte. Safe Alliance has successfully served the community for more than 100 years providing hope and healing to survivors of trauma, domestic and sexual violence, and child abuse.
